I managed to build 75% of a 50 foot retaining wall this weekend. There's a 2 foot diameter root standing in the way of completing the final 25%. Nothing a little chainsaw work can't fix. I hope I don't lose a toe in the process.
I've given myself this month to get all the house work that I've been putting off for the last 9 months done. Problem is I'm also riding big miles on the weekends. Nothing like 4 hours of saddle time before working in the yard.

I put in a 30' wall - digging is HARD.
Unless you know that root is dead, I'd really look into getting it removed. If you just cut it - it'll grow back (through your wall). If you do get it removed, make sure it's back-filled properly, because it'll decompose, and create a sink-hole.
